ASA Regional Finals in Sunderland & Sheffield and District Club Gala in Sheffield.

Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club's swimmers are celebrating a medal bonanza following the weekend events at the ASA Regional Finals in Sunderland and also at the Sheffield and District Club Gala in Sheffield.

 

ASA North East Regional Finals Sunderland

Competing against the fastest swimmers in the north east region (clubs from the deepest  of South Yorkshire to North of Northumbria ) 12 elite  Barnsley swimmers obtained the tough qualification times to earn their places at Sunderland. 

 

Curtis Harper,  Georgia Lee, and Tom Speed all earned silverware with Curtis Harper (11) securing a Gold in the 100m and 200m backstroke.

Head Coach Carly Herbert said "The swimmers put an immense amount of effort in prior to and during the competition. The results obtained were a fantastic achievement, and everyone involved in the swimming club are thrilled. This also provides a great springboard for qualifying for the national finals that will be held in next year"

 

Senior Team Manager Craig Lee said "For a relatively small swimming club we have punched well above our weight and delivered some outstanding performances.  All credit to swimmers, coaches and parents who have worked hard  and showed tremendous commitment  especially the extra early morning training sessions to be "match ready" for their races."

 

Sheffield & District

Meanwhile at Ponds Forge Sheffield on Sunday 17 Borough of Barnsley swimmers obtained numerous personal bests and a full range of medals.  Cody Ingram (10) and Megan Sharp (10) obtained the glamourous Best Boy and Best Girl respectfully for their outstanding performances.  A medal tally of 12 gold, 15 silver and 9 bronze medals was achieved by the team. 

 

Team Manager on the day Sam Brain said "All swimmers gave 110% and did themselves and the club proud; some swimmers had pulled themselves off their sick beds to take part. It was also Alanna Sidebottom's first competitive galas following a severe knee injury still  securing a Silver in 50m butterfly & the 200 IM ."

Isabeau's Report - Sheffield and District Gala

Our budding  poolside reporter Isabeau Snee from the Junior Squad has written a brief summary of here experiences at the Sheffield and District Gala.  An astounding achievement and a very well written account.

 

I took part in the Sheffield & district gala on the 6th of November, It was only my second gala and I beat all 6 of my p.b one of which was by 11 seconds so I was really proud of myself even though I didn't win any events

COSSS Summer Meet 23/24 July 2015

Last weekend saw 10 of our swimmers enter the COSSS long course summer meet covering 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle.  A number of events included finals, meaning double swims for some successful swimmers.

 

On the day 1 Greg Lugton (14) made the final in 100m backstroke alongside Georgia Hamblett (15), Emma Smith  (16) and Megan Firth (13) achieving the final in the 100m breaststroke.   Greg came out on top in his final achieving the first gold of the weekend, followed quickly by the 50m freestyle in which he also achieved Gold.

 

Emma went on to compete in a second final being the 100m backstroke.

 

Greg Lugton continued his run of success with silver medals in the 100m Fly, 200m free and a bronze in the 400m freestyle.

 

Megan Sharp began her Butterfly success in the 200m fly achieving the girls age 9/10 gold before continuing in day 2 with Silver in the 50m Fly and bronze in the 100m fly, with a further bronze medal in the 400m freestyle.

 

Rebecca Sanderson achieved 2 golds in the age 17/18 50m backstroke and 50m fly.

 

On day 2 Georgia Hamblett achieved a Silver in 50m Breaststroke with the final medal of the day going to Greg Lugton with a gold in 50m butterfly.

 

Also swimming were Lucy Bratley, Eleanor Valentine-Bull, Roman Wallace.

BOBSC Summer Sizzler 3rd July 2016

 

Last Sunday saw Barnsley’s own gala the Summer Sizzler held at Ponds Forge on short course.  This was an opportunity for all squad members aged 9 and upwards to get their first experience of racing, with many new swimmers in the water for both 50m and 100m events.  

For the more experienced swimmers we saw a number of strong personal bests and medals across all squads.

The morning opened with the 200IM event, seeing a run of golds for Molly Baker (9), Megan Sharp (10) and Jessica Richardson (13) whilst Ella Waller and Millie Hamby (14) achived Silver and Bronze respectively.

In the Boys 100 Backstroke both Curtis Harper who achieved a significant PB and Greg Lugton (14) came away with a speeding ticket. Following this the Boys 100m Breaststroke  saw Alexander Tikhonov (11) achieve Bronze his first medal of the day and Roman Wallace (12) an up and coming swimmer in the club achieved Silver, whilst Nathan Billingham (14) Bronze

Megan Sharp and Jessica Richardson clocked up their second Golds of the day in the 100m fly, with Georgia Clark and Ella Waller (14) gaining the Silver and Bronze followed by a Gold for Alanah Hill in the 15+ age group.

In their 3rd event  the Girls 100m Backstroke both Molly Baker and Megan Sharp came away with Silver as did Millie Hamby (14) whilst Jessica Richardson clocked up 3/3 golds.

The Boys 50 fly saw Curtis Harper achive Silver, Kalum Smart (12) Gold and Greg Lugton (14) Speeding ticket,

Jasmine Ball (9) gained her first gold of the day in the 50m breaststroke whilst Megan Sharp and Ella Gibbs (11) achieved Bronze, Megan Firth then achieved Gold and Jessica Richardson Bronze for 13 age group.

Boys 50 Fly Curtis Harper(11) Speeding ticket, Roman Wallace and Kalum Smart taking Gold and Silver for the 12 year olds, Greg Lugton clocking up another speeding ticket.

In the final event of the morning Jasmine Ball achieved her 2nd Gold in the 50m freestyle whilst  Millie Hamby (14) and Georgia Hamblett (15) gained Bronze.

The afternoon opened as the morning had started with the 200m IM, this time for the boys in which Nathan Billingham achcieved Gold.

For those competing in the 50m Backstroke, Megan Sharp and Jessica Richardson gained silver, whilst Jasmine Ball came away with Bonze for the 9 yr group.

Familiar names competing in the Boys 50m Breaststroke with Alex Tikhonov winning a Speeding Ticket and Roman Wallace (12) Gold,

In the second Girls fly event this time 50m Molly Baker achieved Bronze, Jessica Richardson Gold, Millie Hamby Silver and Alanah Hill Bronze. On the last boys 50m event – Backstroke -  Curtis Harper gained a Speeding Ticket & Alexander Tikhonov Silver (11), Roman Wallace Silver,  Greg Lugton Speeding Ticket.

The girls 100m Breaststroke saw some great success in the 9 and 13 age groups with  Jasmine Ball Gold and Molly Baker Bronze, whilst in the higher age group Gold and Silver were achieved for Megan Firth and Jessica Richardson (13).

Success continued in Fly for the Boys 100m Alex Tikhonov gaining another medal, Gold, Kalum Smart (12) Bronze and Greg Lugton (14) a further Speeding Ticket setting him up for next seasons County and Regional Champs.

In the Penultimate event Girls 100m Freestyle Jasmine Ball, Megan Sharp and Jessica Richardson swam to another Gold and success for Millie Hamby (15) with Silver.

Finally, in what was a very successful meet was the Boys 100m Free in which Curtis Harper gained another Speeding ticket and Alexander Tikhonov Gold in the 1 age group, Roman Wallace Bronze in 12’s and Greg Lugton (14) another speeding ticket.

Rotherham were successful in winning club of the day for the highest medal points.

Scarborough Weekend gala 16/17 June

This weekend saw the annual residential 3 day event at Scarborough where our squad compete in long distance and sprint races at short course.  This is such a good team building event whilst being great competition and lots of fun for all swimmers involved.   The atmosphere left our swimmers coming away with numerous speeding tickets, medals and personal bests whilst also having 3 people in the swim off for skins.  

All events on Saturday and Sunday were categorised A and B grade with appropriate cut off times for both, seeing many of the squad members achieve Speeding Tickets (TF) where they go too quick for a medal.

Friday night started fantastically well with the 200m & 400m freestyle events for girls and boys, with the team picking up a good number of medals:-

200m Free Lewis Baker (11) Gold, Kalum Smart (12) Silver & Roman Wallace (12) Bronze, Nathan Billingham (14) Bronze and Thomas Speed (17) Silver).  For the Girls in the same event Molly Baker achieved her first (9) Gold in her first competition for the club.

In the 400m Lewis came away with his second gold of the weekend, whilst Roman achieved his first Gold.  Whilst for the girls, Megan Sharp and Eleanor Valentine-Bull (both 10) successfully gained Gold and Silver both with strong personal bests.  Jessica Richardson (13) gained the Gold and Harriett Ostrowski-Jones came away with Bronze concluding the first days racing.

Saturday morning was an early start for the 200IM event, Lewis Baker being first off the blocks swimming quicker than the cut off time gaining a speeding ticket, whilst Alexander Tikhonov came away with Gold in the 11 year boys.  Kalum Smart and Roman Wallace (12) also swam quicker showing the great progress made in the last few months, likewise for Molly Baker she achieved a quicker time than the B grade medals.

Megan Sharp (10) achieved Gold with Georgia Lee (11) and Elizabeth Safonkina (14) gaining Bronze in the 200IM at A grade, whilst Georgia Clarke (14) gained Silver at B Grade.

Session 3 saw the start of the 50m and 100m races, the first being 50m Backstroke for 13 and over, William Kenny (13) gained the first ST of the session, whilst Nathan Billingham, Bronze and  Thomas Speed, Gold achieve A grade medals.   In the 50m Breaststroke William Kenny gained a Silver B grade.

In the girls 50m 13over Breaststroke, Jessica Richardson (13) achieved Bronze A grade and Elizabeth Safonkina Gold A grade, with both swimmers being successful also in the 50m Backstroke, Jess with a silver and Elizabeth Gold at A grade, whilst Georgia Clark came away with a Gold at B grade.

 

In the Boys 50m Butterfly Cody Ingram achieved Silver B grade as did Jonathan Wightman, whilst Alexander Tikhonov Gold, Lewis Baker and Kalum Smart gained Silver at A grade.  In the girls 50m freestyle Jasmine Ball & Molly Baker were Gold and Silver respectively for A grade 9 year olds with Megan Sharp also gaining Gold for the A 10’s, Lucy Wainright coming in with a speeding ticket for B grade as did Lucy Redfern (12).

The Boys 100 Freestyle saw Cody gaining his second medal of the weekend with a Bronze B grade, Alexander Tikhonov and Myles Tupman gaining Gold and Bronze respectively in the A grade 11 year olds and Roman Wallace gaining a ST for 12year B grade.  Meanwhile in the Girls 100 butterfly, Molly clocked up a gold at A grade and Megan Sharp gained her first speeding ticket at A grade.

Cody Ingram continued his medal haul with a bronze B grade in the 50m Breaststroke whilst Alexander Tikhonov gained an A grade Gold.  In the girls 50m Backstroke Jasmine Ball (9) gained Silver with Megan Sharp (10) achieving Gold both at A grade whilst Lucy Wainwright (10) Silver, Lucy Redfern (12) ST and Lucy Gray (12) Bronze at B Grade.

William Kenny and Nathan Billingham continued there medal spree with a Silver and Gold respectively at B Grade, and Thomas Stather (16)  also Silver, whilst Thomas Speed comes away with the A Grade Gold.  In the Girls 100m Freestyle Elizabeth Safonkina gained the A grade Bronze and Millie Hamby (14) the B Grade Gold.

In the Boys 100m Backstroke Alexander Tichonov achieved A Grade Bronze, whilst in 12 years Kalum Smart came away with a speeding ticket and Roman Wallace the Gold.

For the 100m Breaststroke Molly Barker gained 9 yr gold with Eleanor Valentine-Bull and Megan Sharp getting 10yr Silver and Bronze respectively, whilst Georgial Lee (11) achieved Gold all at A grade.

In the Girls 50m Fly Jessica Richardson (13) raced to end for an A grade Gold and Georgia Hamblett had a close competition for B Grade Bronze.

Sunday brought another early start with the 100IM events with the boys having a great run of success, Lewis Baker, ST and Alexander Tikhonov Gold at A grade with Myles Tupman topped the table with a ST for B grade, Kalum Smart and Roman Wallace went on to get B grade ST as did William Kenny with Nathan Billingham (14) A Grade Silver.

For the Girls Jasmine Ball gained an A grade gold while Molly Baker achieved a B Grade ST, for the 10 years group Megan Sharp gained another Gold at A grade and Eleanor VB achieved a ST for B grade, Georgia Lee and Maea Hamby both 11 achieved the A and B grade silvers respectively.  Jessica Richardson & Elizabeth Safonkina added to their medals with another A Gold as Millie Hamby (14) achieved the A Grade Silver.  Alanna Sidebottom (13) and Georgia Clarke (14) gained a Silver and ST respectively.

Anya Yates (12) won a B Grade Bronze which secured her position in the skins relay competition which she went on to win.

Lewis Baker was back in the water for the boys 100m fly securing ‘A’ gold and Alexander Tikhonov ‘A’ Silver whilst Kalum Smart (12) ‘B’ Bronze.  In the girls 100m freestyle Molly Baker secured Gold Megan and Eleanor (10) again secured Gold and Silver all A grade, whilst Anya Yates gained the Bronze B grade spot.

Thomas Stather continued with his medals in the 50m Backstroke with a Silver medal whilst for the girls 50m breaststroke Elizabeth Safonkina achieved A grade Silver and Georgia Hamblett A Grade Bronze.

Lewis Baker and Alex Tikhonov again returned to the fore for the 50m freestyle gaining ‘A’ gold and bronze respectively, whilst for the girls 50m fly Megan Sharp exceeded ‘A’ medals picking up a speeding ticket and Lily Martin (12) picked up her first medal with a Silver B grade.

The 100m backstroke saw Jessica Richardson increase her medals with a Silver ‘A’ as did Elizabeth Safonkina with a Gold ‘A’ and Georgia Clark with a Bronze ‘B’.

In the final session of the day William Kenny picked up a ‘B’ bronze in the 50m Fly, whilst for the girls Georgia Clarke 50m Freetyle ‘B’ Bronze.  With the younger end back in the water Alex and Myles gained Gold and Bronze ‘A’ in the 100m Breaststoke with  Roman Wallace again picking up a speeding ticket.

Returning to 100m fly Jessica Richardson achieved Gold ‘A’ and Georgia Clarke Gold ‘B’.  The penultimate event of the day was the Bous 50m Backstroke seeing Alex with a further ‘A’ silver and Kalum Smart with Roman Wallace pick up the Silver and Bronze ‘B’.

The medals continued in the final event of the day with Jasmine Ball and Molly Baker achieving Gold and Bronze  respectively in 50m Breaststroke, followed by Megan Sharp and Lucy Wainwright atchiving the same whilst Georgia Lee gained the Silver, all at ‘A’ grade.

Also swimming were Rebecca Sanderson, Megan Lee, Lucy Wightman.

North East Region Age Groups weekend 2

Elizabeth achieves her second final

 

 

Curtis Harper, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones, Jessica Richardson and Elizabeth Safonkina returned to Ponds Forge this weekend for ASA North East Regional Champs.

Jessica Richardson (13) competed in the 400m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly gaining a PB in the 3 events whilst also swimming the 50m backstroke.

Elizabeth Safonkina (14) achieved her second final of the event on the 50m backstroke, qualifying  10th and finishing 9th in the final with a PB of 33.90, a great achievement.

Harriet Ostrowski-Jones competed in the 200m Breaststroke, whilst Curtis Harper competed in both the 100m and 400m Freestyle and narrowly missing out on a PB in the 50m Backstroke with 36.92.

North East Region Championship Week 1

 

This weekend saw 4 of our Age Group (11 – 14) swimmers compete in the North East Regional ASA Championship at Ponds Forge on long course, to enter regionals a higher qualification time needs to be gained.   The event is swum across 2 weekends and the swimmers will be back in the pool over the bank holiday weekend.   The age group is based on the swimmers age on 31st December 2016.

 

Jessica Richardson (13) was first out in the 100m backstroke achieving a time of 1:16.97 beating her previous PB.  Elizabeth Safonkina (14) achieved 8th in qualifying making it through to the final later in the day, a great achievement coming 9th.

 

Elizabeth later competed in the 50m breaststroke achieving a PB of 38:16.  Whilst Jessica competed in the 200m fly on the Sunday, narrowly missing out on a  PB with a great swim at 2:49.98.

 

Curtis Harper (11) who qualified for the regionals at Rotherham gained another PB with 1:19.89 and although was swimming in the 11/12 category came 2nd in his age group. 

 

The last BoBSC event of the weekend was for Harriet Ostrowski-Jones in the 100m breaststroke gaining at time of 1:31.43.

Rotherham Metro Grade 1 Meet 7th & 8th May 2016

Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club report 7/5 & 8/5

BoBSC were in the pool again this weekend for the Rotherham Metro Level 1 Long Course meet, this was only open to individuals who had achieved qualifying time, but also falls the weekend before the age group North East Regional Meet.

This proved to be another successful meet for the team coming home with a good number of personal bests and medals, along with more Regional Qualifying times.  The 7 swimmers competing amassed 29 personal bests across 42 swims.

Megan Sharp (10) started the weekend as she intended to go on, gaining a 6 second PB on the 200m Butterfly with a 3:24:09 and the first gold of the event, she continued her morning with a Silver in the 50m Backstroke and a Bronze in the 100m Freestyle.   In the afternoon Megan took to the pool for Silvers in the 50m Freestyle and 100m backstroke.   To add to her success on the Sunday, Megan continued with a Silver in the 100m butterfly and 200m Freestyle and gold in the 50m Fly and 200m backstroke.

Meanwhile there were some strong performances from Millie Hamby (14), Elizabeth Safonkina (14) and Libby Turner (15), Elizabeth and Libby gaining 4th and 5th respectively in their age groups for the 200m Individual Medley.

Elizabeth achieved top 10 finishes the 50m & 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 50m Butterfly, and 50m Breaststroke with a 5th in the 200m backstroke.  Whilst Libby maintained top 10 finishes in the 50m & 100m freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke alongside the 100m fly with a PB of 1:07.88..

Thomas Speed maintained his good form with a Silver in the 50m Breaststroke and a 4th but new PB of 1:00:64 in the 100m Butterfly.   In the next session, Thomas gained a further Silver in the 100m Breaststroke and 6th Place in 50m Butterfly with a further PB of 27.28  Tom gained a Silver in the 200m Breaststroke during day 2 of the competition.

Curtis Harper (11) started his campaign with the 200m freestyle achieving Silver with a 7 second PB of 2:33.04, continuing with the silver in 200m backstroke and another good PB for 2:55.04.  His strong performance continued on the Sunday with a Gold in the 50m & 100m Backstroke, 50m Freestyle and 100m freestyle and a bronze in 400m freestyle

Jessica Richardson took to the pool for the ladies long distance 800 event, achieving 4th place.

Next weekend a number of our age group swimmers compete in the North East Region competition at Ponds Forge.

North East Regional Youth and Senior Competition 2016

Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club report 30/4 and 1/5 2016

Last weekend saw 6 of our swimmers aged 15 and over compete in the North East Region Championships (LC)

The first session went well with Tom Speed (17) qualifying first in the 50m breaststroke breaking the 30 second barrier for the first time this year with a time of 27.98. 

In the following 100m breaststroke vent Libby Turner (15) one of the youngest competitors there achieved a mid table finish against individuals up to the age of 28.   Libby then competed in the 100m fly 2 events later coming home in 1:07.92.  With a busy morning schedule, Libby competed in the 200IM achieving 2:33.30, followed by the 50m Freestyle with a time of 28:93, whilst Holly Milnes (17) gained a strong time of 29.33.

Thomas Speed continued his meet with the 50m fly achieving 27:93 with Gregory Lugton competing in the same event finishing with a time of 29:02.

The afternoon session comprised of all the finals seeing Tom Speed gaining Gold in the 50m Breaststroke event after his qualification in first position in the morning.

 

Sunday saw Libby return to the pool competing in the 100m Freestlye with a time of 1:03:39, 50m Breaststroke at 37:37, 100m Backstroke 1:11:47.  Tom returned to the pool for the 100m fly with a time of 1:02:12.

Gregory Lugton (15) also returned to compete in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 31:88.

Sunday also saw Corine and Alanah Hiill qualify for the 200m Butterfly, and whilst Corine was unfortunately unable to compete, Alanah achieved a time of 2:43:08.

In Toms final event of the weekend the 200IM he gained a time of 2:26:95, whilst Libby and Holly concluded their weekend in the 50m Butterfly with times of 31:12 and 31:71 respectively.

The swimmers are now waiting to see if anyone has achieved times for The top 24 in each age group and event will be invited to compete at the Summer Championships in July. The qualifying window for the British Summer Championships is the 11th March-30th May.the British Nationals where the top 24 in each age group are invited to swim.   The end of May will see a number of our younger swimmers in the North East Regionals age group competition.

Stocksbridge Meet 23rd April 2016

 

BoBSC returned to Ponds Forge on St Georges day for the Stocksbridge Pentaqua gala, competing sprints over the long course pool.  It was fantastic to see a number of new competitors with us for the weekend with the team taking part in 168 individual swims, and alongside new times achieved 101 personal bests, many of the swimmers improving on times achieved only 3 weeks ago.

 

The squad started the day well in the 100m backstroke with top 10 finishes coming from Megan Sharp (10), Georgia Lee (10), Harriet Ostrowski-Jones (12) and Jessica Richardson (13), and this success continued into the second event with Lewis Baker  (11) achieving his first of 9 medals with a silver in the boys 50m Backstroke.

 

In the girls 50m Breaststroke, Kloe Eade, Bronze (9) received her first medal of the day, whilst Jasmine Ball came 5th in the same age group, in the 10 year group Georgia Lee came away with her first Gold of the day with the second being in the 100m Breaststroke.

 

Megan Firth (13) and Lucy Hatfield (14) both won Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke for their respective age groups with Harriet and Jessica again achieving top 10 positions.  Lucy later narrowly missed out on 3rd in the 100m breaststroke.

 

In the boys 100m Breastroke Lewis came in 2nd and Myles Tupman achieving 4th in the same age group, whilst Roman Wallace (12) gaining Bronze and Matthew Selous achieving 4th whilst Nathan Billingham achieved top 10 placing.

 

In the 100m Fly Megan Sharp gained her first of four medals with a Gold, showing strength in the stroke there were a number of other top 10 finishers, including Georgia Clarke and Ella Waller both 14, and Jessica Richardson narrowly missing a medal by 0.28s.

 

The girls 50m Freestyle saw Kloe (9) gain her first gold of the event whilst we also had a number of top 10 finishers including Megan Sharp and Georgia Lee in the 10 year group and Megan Firth (13).

 

Lewis’ medal success continued throughout the morning and into the afternoon with 3 golds in 100m freestyle, 100m  backstroke and 50m breaststroke. The 50m breaststroke also saw Myles, Roman and Matthew finishing just outside the top 3 and Thomas Stather (16) in the top 10.

 

In the 50 butterfly Lewis gained the first of his 3 silvers, whilst Nathan Billingham came in top 10.

 

Just before lunch Megan Sharp achieved Bronze in the 200 individual medley with Jessica Richardson again gaining a close 4th place.

 

The afternoon saw some great personal bests with many swimmers achieving the current Yorkshire times.

 

In the first event Lewis gained his second silver in 200m IM with the other being 50m freestyle and a Bronze in 100m Butterfly, giving him joint 2nd top boy for the day also.

 

Megan Sharp added to her medals with a Bronze in 100m freestyle, with top 10 finishes for Kloe Eade & Jasmine Ball (9) and Eleanor Valentine-Bull (10).

 

Jasmine Ball gained Bronze in the 100m breaststroke along with the aforementioned Gold for Georgia Lee, Harriett Ostrowski-Jones and Jessica Ford (12) were both strong finishers in the top 10 as were Megan Firth, Georgia Clarke and Ella Waller.

 

In the 50m Fly, Kloe Eade (9) flew to Gold, and in the 10 year category Megan achieved bronze.

 

Other swimmers achieving top 10, personal bests or their first events were Neve Booth, Lucy Bratley, Ella Gibbs, Amy Guettat, Megan Lee, Lucy Redfern, Robyn Sykes, Lucy Wainwright, Lucy Wightman, Hannah Wilkie, Imogen Wolff, Olivia Wolff, Nathan Billingham, Alfie Firth, Sam Guettat, Cody Ingram, Kalum Smart, Jonathon Wrightman.

Harrogate A & B Grade meet 2nd and 3rd April

 

The first weekend in April saw 15 of our squad members travel to Harrogate Spa for an exciting A & B grade meet where there were 2 opportunities in each event for swimmers to get a medal.   If anyone swam faster than the B grade cut off times they were automatically put into the A grade times.   This made the competition more exciting with the whole squad involved in cheering on each other.

This gala also gave squad members opportunity to compete in the 200m and 400m events alongside the usual sprints.

Whilst there is no break from swimming the Easter holidays had treated all of our swimmers well with everyone achieving personal bests across the weekend, including a number of county and regional times.

In the first event of the day, 400m freestyle each swimmer achieved a PB of at least 10 seconds.

The girls had a successful 50m breaststroke with Corinne Hill, Emma Smith and Alanah Hill coming home with the top 3 B grade medals consecutively, whilst Georgia Hamblet (15) and Lucy Hatfield (14) achieved Bronze at A grade.  Millie Hamby (13) and Georgia Clark (14) both achieved B grade silver in their 50m event.   Nathan Billingham (14) also achieved B grade Gold in the same event.

In the boys 50m Freestyle Matthew Selous (12) achieved B grade Gold, followed swiftly by Nathan Billingham getting his second medal of the day -  Bronze in A grade 200m freestyle, Georgia Clarke also came away with B grade silver and Georgia Hamblet (15) B grade gold in the same event.

In the 200m Backstroke Eleanor Valentine-Bull (10) achieved B grade Silver, this was promptly followed by a further medal for Matthew Selous in the 100m Breaststroke with B grade Silver.

The girls meanwhile also had a great run of success in the 100m breaststroke, Jessica Ford (12) picking up Bronze at B grade, Elizabeth Safonkina (14) also a gold at B grade.  Corinne Hill, Georgia Hamblett and Emma Smith meanwhile came home in the top 3 positions respectively.

The evening session saw the first medal come from the 200IM with Georgia Hamblett (15) achieving B grade Gold and Elizabeth Safokina (14)  A grade Bronze.

In the 50m butterfly Georgia Clarke came home with a B grade Silver, whilst Holly Milnes (17) and Corinne Hill (16) were successful at A grade winning Gold and Bronze respectively for over 15’s.  Moving further into the evening saw Lewis Baker (11) achieve A grade Gold in the same event.  Georgia Clarke then continued her medal success with a Bronze in 100m Freestyle(B grade), and Holly Milnes achieved the A grade Bronze and Emma Smith (16) the B grade bronze.

Alanah Hill came 2nd in the 200m Butterfly at A grade with the final event of the night fast approaching.  It was now past 9pm and it was time for the 400m Individual Medlay Kalum Smart (13) came away with the Gold at B grade, as did Georgia Clarke and Georgia Hamblett.  Corinne Hiill achieved silver at A grade.

The Sunday saw more great achievements, with Nathan Billingham and Millie Hamby starting the day with B Grade Gold in the 400m freestyle (13 and over) and Lucy Greatorex achieving PB.

In the 200m breaststroke Georgia Lee achieved A grade silver, followed by Elizabeth Safokina and Georgia Clarke gaining the A & B grade silvers respectively in 50m freestlye, whilst sisters Alanah (Bronze A grade) and Corinne Hill (Gold B Grade) had only 0.35 seconds between their times.

In the 50m backstroke Maea Hamby (10) gained the B grade gold, in the older aged girls 200m Backstroke Elizabeth continued her medal run with A grade Gold along with a B grade Bronze for Millie Hamby.

In the 100m fly the squad gained 4 more medals, Bronze A Grade for Jessica Richardson (13) who also successfully gained a number of Regional times across the day along with an A grade Silver in 50m Backstroke.  On the 100 fly additional medals were B grade Bronze for Georgia Clark and A Grade Bronze for Alanah Hill.  

In the 50m Breaststroke Jessica Ford achieved her second medal of the weekend with a B Grade Silver.

Rounding off with the last event of the day the 100m backstroke, Georgia Lee gained a B grade silver, whilst Emma Smith (16) came away with the B grade Gold.

Both Lucy Hatfield and Lucy Greatorex also competed across the weekend achieving personal bests

Easter weekend saw Barnsley swimming in the Level 1 meet at City of Sheffield with clubs from far and wide across the country competing.  Qualifying times were high and 8 of our swimmers were in the mix.   Finals were based on 14 / under and 15/ over with other age groups having heat declared winners.

 

Friday night was distance night and saw Lewis Baker (11) swim the 1500m freestyle finishing in a time of 19:53:77 coming home with the Bronze medal.

 

Saturday was another exciting day with Lewis Baker achieving his second bronze in his age group for 100m back.  Whilst Tom Speed now competing in the open age group finalled in the 50m Breaststroke.

 

Libby Turner (14), who had achieved times for a wide variety of races, came 6th in the 200m IM heats making the final and 7th in the 100m Butterfly in her age group.

 

Lewis continued his run of success into Saturday afternoon with a 4th place in the 100m freestyle, and on Sunday morning gained the gold medal in the 200m freestyle and silver in the 200m backstroke and 100m Breaststroke.

Thomas Speed meanwhile finished 10th in his age category for the 100m breaststroke.

 

In the 5th and final session of the weekend, Lewis Baker was out again with a bronze in the 200 IM, Greg Lugton achieved 9th in his age group for the 100m Butterfly.  Whilst Libby Turner narrowly missed out in the final of the 100m freestyle.

 

Lewis concluded his weekend with the last race of the session, the 400m freestyle coming home with a final Bronze and a PB of 5:07:03 for the event.

 

Other swimmers for the weekend were Lucy Hatfield, Holly Milnes, Elizabethe Safonkina and Emma Smith.

Yorkshire Champs Final Weekend - an exciting conclusion

 

The end of February saw the last of the Yorkshire Championships held this time at Ponds Forge with the Sprints for 14 and under on Saturday and the same for 15 and over Sunday, alongside the team relays for both Individual Medley and Freestyle.

 

Although the last gala for many swimmers was only 4 weeks ago, a remarkable 33 personal bests were achieved across 53 swims, and 10 swimmers achieving finals on the day.

 

Abigail Miles was successful in finalling for the 50m freestyle and Breaststroke, achieving the silver medal in breaststroke success was continued in the afternoon with the Bronze in 50m backstroke.  Also making the 50m Backstroke final was Elizabeth Safonkina who finished 5th.

 

Continuing success in the backstroke, Curtis Harper gained a bronze medal in the 50m event, and also the silver for the 50m freestyle event in the afternoon.

 

In the Girls 50m Breaststroke, Georgia Lee qualifying 3rd achieved 7th in the final of this event.  Whilst in the boys breaststroke event, the club achieved more medals with Alexander Tikhonov (11) came away with the Bronze and Lewis Baker (12) the Silver.  Lewis also continued his good run for the whole Yorkshire Championships with a 5th in the final of the 50m Freestyle.

 

 

The final day of the Championships saw a continued level of personal bests amongst the >15 year swimmers.  

 

The session started with the Girls Backstroke with Libby Turner (15) achieving the final, her first of 4 finals in the day with qualification in all 4 strokes. 

 

Thomas Speed (16) qualifying for the 50m Breaststroke in 4th place, ultimately achieving Bronze in the event.   In the Mens 50m Freestyle Gregory Lugton narrowly missed out on the last place in the final.   Gregory moved onto the afternoon with a good qualifying time in the Mens 50m butterfly, entering the final in 6th place and finishing in the same place.

 

With 3 finals guaranteed for the afternoon session, the team events started with 2 exciting heats in the womens 9/10 Medley, Barnsley qualifying 4th,   the team of Jasmine Ball, Kloe Eade, Megan Sharp and Eleanor Valentine-Bull, then went on to do the same in the 9/10 Freestyle relay.

 

The Mens 11/12 team then followed, qualifying 6th for the 200m freestlye relay, with the Womens 17yr over 200m Medley team narrowly missing out by 0.5seconds in that event final.   The boys then guaranteed their second final qualifying in 9th for the 200m medley.

 

Despite delays caused by timing issues, and increased tension the girls held it together achieving 4th position in both their events, being just 0.19 seconds behind Bronze medal in the 200 freestyle.  The Mens team comprising of Lewis Baker, Curtis Harper, Kalum Smart, Myles Tupman and Roman Wallace had an equally exciting 200m Freestlye relay Final coming home in 5th place, followed by 6th for the 200m medley relay.

Barnsley Minors & Yorkshire Champs Week 2

 

Yorkshire Championships 13th / 14th February

 

The second week of the Yorkshire Championships saw some more great swimming from the club with 5 medals being picked up by the squad along with further top 10 finishes.

In the Boys 400m Individual Medley, Lewis Baker (12) secured a top 5 finish whilst in the weekend also achieving  Silver in 100m Freestyle and Bronze in the 1500m freestyle, came 4th in the 200m Breaststroke and competed in the 100m backstroke final.

 

Alexander Tikhonov (11) also achieved a 4th place in the 200m Breaststroke.

 

Another good week for Curtis Harper with a 6th place in the 100m freestyle final and after qualifying 2nd fastest for the 100m Backstroke, finished 6th in the final.

 

Abigail Miles (12) achieved Bronze in 200m Breaststroke whilst also coming 5 in the 400m individual medley.

 

Megan Sharp (10) achieved Bronze in 200m Butterfly, the only 10 year old in the 10/11 age group

 

Thomas Speed (17) achieved Silver in the 200m breaststroke.

Barnsley Minors

 

This week saw the first round of the competition since the promotion to Division 1 last year.  For the minors league each club has a swimmer doing 50m of each stroke by age group and a relay team for both freestyle and individual medlay.    

 

 

It was an exciting weekend with second place being in grasp in the last 5 races, ultimately, Barnsley were 4th with 109  points, behind Sheffield and Rotherham on 119 / 120 respectively and Adwick coming first with 140 points.

Yorkshire Championships Week 1

 

This weekend was the first of 3 for the Yorkshire County Championships, at John Charles Sports Centre Leeds in the long course pool.   To gain opportunity to race the squads have to achieve cut off times across each age group, this year due to the level of entries, a number of our swimmers achieved the times but were unable to complete. 

 

Age groups were based on age at end of year with 10/11 at end of year competing in the same category.

 

Whilst in this first weekend the squad did not achieve any medals in the tough competition there were many personal bests and top 6 places, there was a mixture of heat declared winners and finals across the day.

 

In 100m backstroke Abigail Miles (12) achieved a fantastic 4th place in the final.

 

Alexander Tikhonov also achieved 4th in the 10/11 200m Individual Medlay. Whislt Abigail achieved 6th in the same event.

 

Alexander Tikhonov went on to qualify for the final of the 100 Breaststroke in top spot as did Thomas Speed, but narrowly missed out on a medal within 0:31 seconds splitting the top 4, whilst Lewis Baker (12) achieved the final qualifying 5th.

 

On the Saturday afternoon placing continued with Curtis Harper achieveing 6th in the 10/11 400m freestyle, and Lewis Baker coming home in 4th.

 

In the 400m Freestyle Abigail also achieved a top 6 position with a time of 5:08:85, and Libby Turner qualified for the 200m IM final.

 

Racing continued on Sunday with 9 swimmers competing, Abigail Miles finished 5 in final of the 100m Breaststroke, and Libby Turner (15 AG) competed in the Final of the 100m Fly and came 6th in the final of the 100m Breastroke.

 

The afternoon session saw Curtis Harper and Alexander Tikhonov come home in 4th and 5th respectively for the Boys 200m (10/11)Freestyle, with Lewis Baker (12) achieving a top 6 position in his age category.

 

Also competing were Jessica Richardson, Elizabeth Safonkina,  Corinne Hill, Alanah Hill, Sam Charlesworth, Magan Sharp, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones, Megan Firth, Greg Lugton, Lucy Gretorex.

BoBSC Results from Rotherham Metro A / B Grade 23rd & 24th January 2016

Last weekend the Borough of Barnsley Swim Club were back at Ponds Forge for the Rotherham Metro Grade A / B meet where swimmers raced at different categories based on their times, leading to an interesting and exciting weekend.  Racing went on over 2 days with 18 members of the squad competing across the 2 levels for age 10 and over, 9 and under were an open group, a fantastic 23 medals were achieved with a strong field from as far afield as Middlesbrough.

 

Alfie Firth (9) came away with his first medal with a Bronze in the 50m Back.

 

In the B grade section the squad achieved 9 medals with Matthew Selous achieving Silver in 200 Freestyle and Bronze in both 200 Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke. 

 

Megan Lee (14) had a good afternoon session winning the Silver in 200m Breaststroke and Bronze in 50m Freestyle, whilst Georgia Clarke (13) achieved Silver in both the 200m Breaststroke and 100m freestyle at B Grade.

 

Georgia Hamblett (14) had a close race in the 50m fly bringing home the Silver after success with a 200m Breaststroke gold. 

 

Maea Hamby (10) achieved gold in 50m back.

 

At A grade level, Curtis Harper (10) had another successful weekend bringing home 2 Golds, 1 silver and a speeding ticket in 100m Backstroke, 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and 50m backstroke respectively.

 

Greg Lugton (14) also had a strong weekend following on from Leeds with 2 Silvers in 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, alongside 3 bronze medals in 100m and 50m backstroke and 50m Freestyle. 

 

Georgia Lee (10) continued her run of medals in Breastroke with Gold in the 100m distance.  Lucy Hatfield achieving Bronze in the 50m race of the same stroke.

 

In the last event of the day, Megan sharp (10) and Georgia Clarke (13) both achieved the Bronze at A Grade 50m Butterfly.

 

Also competing were Neve Booth, Lucy Bratley, Megan Firth, Millie Hamby, Cody Ingram, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones and Jonathan Wrightman.

Leeds Meet January 9th & 10th 2016

 

 

BOBSC – Leeds meet Leads to Medal Haul 9th & 10th January 2015

 

This weekend saw Barnsley return to the pool for the first time in 2016 in the Leeds Grand Prix meet at John Charles Stadium, with 25  swimmers competing across sprint and distance swims.  This meet gave a rare opportunity for boys to compete at 1500m and girls at 800m.

 

The squad had a strong return in medals setting up many swimmers for the forthcoming Yorkshire Championship, with a change in age group recognition being age at end of year rather than age on day of event.

 

Those present achieved 50 personal bests across the 98 swims the team took part in.

 

Megan Sharp (10) performed strongly across both days achieving 3 Golds in 200 Individual Medley, 50m & 200m Fly, with a further 4 Silver medals in 50m & 200m back stroke and 50m & 100m Freestyle.

 

Curtis Harper (11) continued his run of success from December with Gold in 50m & 200m backstroke, Silver in 100m back & 50m freestyle and finally a Bronze in 100m free.

 

Georgia Lee, competing in the breaststroke events, received 100% return with Gold in the 50m and Silver in both 100m & 200m swims.

 

Abigail Miles (12) gained Gold in the 200m IM, 50m back, 200m freestyle and the prestigious 800m freestyle.

 

Lewis Baker also in the 12  year category swam to success in the boys key 1500m event bringing home Gold in his only race of the weekend with a PB of 20:34:07.

 

Jessica Richardson (13) was successful in her 200m freestyle event with a Bronze fighting of close competition from other members of BOBSC.

This was the last qualifying competition for the Yorkshire Championships taking place over 3 weekends in February, the squad are next out for Rotherham Metro meet on the 22 / 23 February.

BoBSC Christmas Sprint 9th December 2015

 

This weekend was the highlight of our season with the annual Borough of Barnsley Swim Club Christmas Sprint at Ponds Forge with over 350 swimmers competing from 20 clubs.  Events were swum long course with all strokes at 50m and 100m alongside 200IM.

The gala awarded top club and top girl and boy in all age groups, the squad had a fantastic day coming away with many of the top girl and boy trophies within our 50+ swimmers competing.

 

First race of the day was the Girls 200IM, bringing in Gold for Jessica Richardson (12), Silver for Megan Sharp (9), Macy Yoxall (10), Elizabeth Safonkina (13) and Corinne Hill (15+).

The 100m backstroke saw our squad achieve Gold for Greg Lugton (14), Jessica Richardson and Elizabeth Safokina.  Macy Yoxall continued her good run with Silver, whilst Bronze was awarded to r Alexander Tikhonov (10). 

Megan Sharp continued her medal run with Gold in the 100m Butterfly, Silvers being achieved in the same event by Macy Yoxall, Elizabeth Safonkina and Jess Richardson.

In the 100m breaststroke, Finlay McNicholas (9) and Roman Wallace (11) came home with the Silver.  , Sam Charlesworth (12) achieved bronze in his age group.

Alexander Tikhonov added to his medals with a Gold in both the 100m breaststroke and 50m fly, Greg Lugton also gaining further Golds in the 50m Fly and 50 Freestyle.

The 50m Breaststroke saw Megan Firth (12) achieve Gold, Elizabeth Safokina Silver,  whilst Jazmine Ball (9), Macy Yoxall and Phoebe Mcnicholas achieved Bronze.

In the last event 50m Freestyle before lunch Curtis Harper (10) came away with a speeding ticket in a great 33.59 and Alexander Tikihonov continue the medal spree with a Bronze.  Elizabeth Safokina & Georgia Hamblett (14) achieved gold with Megan Sharp adding to her medals with a bronze, with sisters Macy & Lola Yoxall (10) both gaining speeding tickets in the event.

 

The first event of the afternoon was the boys 200m IM seeing Curtis Harper obtaining the Silver.

Moving into the backstroke, Macy Yoxall gained another Gold in the 10 year group whilst Megan Sharp attained Silver as did Jessica Richardson, Harriett Ostrowski-Jones (12) gaining Bronze.

In the boys 50 Breaststroke, Roman Wallace achieved Silver and Sam Charlesworth & Nathan Billingham (14) Bronze.

The girls 50m fly was a great success with gold for Megan Sharp, Macy Yoxall, Jesssica Richardson and Elizabeth Safokina  with Lola Yoxall gaining the silver and Georgia Hamblett the Bronze in their respective age groups.

The Girls 100m Breaststroke saw twins Macy and Lola come home with Silver and Bronze respectively adding to their great day, Lucy Hatfield (13) and Megan Firth achieved Gold with Elizabeth Safokina & Corinne Hill (15) also getting a silver.

100m Fly was Gold for the boys also with Alexander Tikhonov achieving first, accompanied by Lewis Baker (11) and Greg Lugton (14).

To round off her day Megan Sharp gained the Silver in 100m Freestyle, with Georgia Lee (10) gaining bronze.  In the 12 year age group Jess Richardson and Lucy Greatorex came away with Gold and Silver respectively. Whilst Elizabeth Safokina achieved Silver and Georgia Hamblett Bronze in their respective age groups.  For the boys in the same event Greg Lugton achieved another Gold.

The club came away top age group awards for Megan Sharp (9), Macy Yoxall (10), Jessica Richardson (12) Elizabeth Safokina (13), Alexander Tikhonov (10), a fantastic end to inter club competitions in 2015.
